NDA Playtests and Embargoes: Streaming Without Losing Your Access

Getting into a closed playtest is a career moment. Losing that access because something embargoed appeared on your stream for four frames is a career story — the bad kind. Creators under NDA operate a machine where the most valuable window on disk is legally radioactive, and the broadcast pipeline next to it is live.

The NDA Trap Is Structural

Publishers hand creators builds under strict embargoes: no streams, no screenshots, no discussion until a date. Meanwhile the practical workflow demands otherwise:

  • You need to play the build for hours to produce content the second the embargo lifts.
  • You need to capture b-roll, clips, and footage before the go-live moment.
  • You probably want to stream something during the embargo period to keep your channel alive.

So the embargoed build lives on the same machine as OBS, the same display server as Discord, the same notification system as your personal life. Every system on that PC — including always-on clipping tools — treats the secret build as just another window. One accidental scene switch, one Display Capture fallback, one forgotten overlay, and you've published what a lawyer would call a material breach.

How Leaks Actually Happen Under NDA

Real failure modes from real creators:

  • The wrong scene. A scene collection built weeks ago still references the playtest build's window. Scene switch mid-stream "why is my game stuttering" — and the embargoed build is on screen.
  • The desktop fallback. Game Capture fails, OBS falls back, and Display Capture shows everything, including the build you were alt-tabbed away from.
  • Metadata before pixels. You never showed the game — but your taskbar showed "CONFIDENTIAL_BUILD_v0.9" for three frames during an alt-tab. Enough. Screenshots of the title alone have ended creator agreements.
  • Clipping software betrayal. Instant replay buffered the playtest session. The clip you save for b-roll later is fine — but so is everything else that was on screen, and the buffer doesn't distinguish.

The Architecture for Creators Under Embargo

The standard is higher than normal streaming, because the cost of a single failure is contractual, not just social.

  1. A dedicated playtest environment. A separate Windows user account, or ideally a separate machine or VM, for embargoed builds. The build never shares a session with your streaming setup. This is the closest a one-PC creator gets to the org solution.
  2. When sharing a machine is unavoidable: cloak the embargoed build's windows from capture as a hard rule, not a habit. Not "remember before going live" — the window is excluded from every capture path, permanently, while installed.
  3. Title masking for the build. The internal build name never appears in taskbar, Alt-Tab, or enumeration. Even a frame of metadata is a breach.
  4. Disable or restrict clipping software during embargo windows, or cloak the build so the buffer never contains it.
  5. Live preview, every time. Before every stream during an embargo period, look at exactly what the audience will see. The three-layer model treats verification as the final layer for a reason — under NDA, it's the cheapest insurance that exists.
  6. A named "embargo" routine. One click: playtest windows cloaked, titles masked, notifications shielded, capture software verified. Repeatable, reviewable, and auditable if a publisher ever asks how you protected their build.

The Honest Limit

No software makes you compliant with an NDA — only your process does. Tools eliminate the accidental leak vectors; they don't cover the deliberate screenshot posted early, and no publisher will accept "my tool failed" as a defense. Read every agreement, and when it says "no capture," believe it and keep the build off the broadcast machine entirely.

The Bottom Line

Embargoed access is earned trust with a dollar value. Treat the secret build like it lives on a different planet from your stream pipeline — because the moment both are windows on one desktop, your process, not your intentions, is the only thing between you and a revoked key.

NoCapture provides OS-level window cloaking, title masking, and notification shielding for Windows. Free for two windows. Because "being careful" isn't a strategy.
