Multi-monitor setups are the standard for remote work, streaming, and development. They are also the most common source of screen-share leaks that users do not anticipate. The second monitor feels safe because you are not looking at it. The capture tool disagrees.
The Wrong Monitor Problem
Zoom, Teams, and OBS allow you to share a specific monitor. If you have two displays, you can share Monitor 1 and keep Monitor 2 private. The failure modes are:
- You select "Screen 2" by accident because the numbering is confusing
- You drag a window from Monitor 2 to Monitor 1 during the share
- You use Display Capture on a laptop with an external monitor and forget which display is primary
- The conferencing app updates and defaults to "Entire Desktop" instead of the last-used monitor
Each failure exposes Monitor 2 in full.
The Background Window Problem
Even if you share the correct monitor, background windows on that monitor are still visible. A terminal minimized to the taskbar of Monitor 1 is still in the frame buffer. A notification from an app on Monitor 2 can draw over Monitor 1 if the notification system treats both displays as a single canvas.
How NoCapture Handles Multi-Monitor
NoCapture's live preview spans all connected displays. When you verify your capture stream, you see every monitor that the capture tool sees. This is critical because some users assume that sharing Monitor 1 means Monitor 2 is invisible. The preview proves or disproves that assumption.
Protection is applied per-window, not per-monitor. A cloaked window on Monitor 2 is excluded from capture regardless of which monitor is being shared. This means you do not need to move sensitive apps to a specific monitor. You need to cloak them.
Recommended Multi-Monitor Setup
Monitor 1 (Shared): The app or document you intend to present. Keep this monitor clean of sensitive apps even if they are cloaked, just to reduce cognitive load.
Monitor 2 (Private): Cloaked apps live here. Slack, email, password manager, internal tools, personal browser. All cloaked. All title-masked. Notification shield enabled.
Verification: Before every share, open live preview. Confirm that Monitor 2 shows only black rectangles or omissions for cloaked apps. Confirm that Monitor 1 shows exactly what you intend.
The Dragging Hazard
If you drag a cloaked window from Monitor 2 to Monitor 1, it remains cloaked. The protection follows the window. However, dragging an uncloaked window by accident is a leak. We recommend pinning sensitive apps to Monitor 2 using Windows snap layouts or third-party window managers, so they do not drift.
OBS and Multi-Monitor
OBS Display Capture can target a specific monitor. If you use OBS for streaming or recording:
- Add a Display Capture source
- Select the specific monitor, not "Default"
- Verify in the OBS canvas that Monitor 2 is absent
- Use NoCapture to cloak any apps on Monitor 1 that should not appear
If you use Window Capture instead, the monitor does not matter. Only the selected window is captured.
The Limitation
NoCapture cannot prevent you from physically moving your head and revealing Monitor 2 to a webcam. It cannot prevent a hardware capture device from capturing the signal before it reaches the monitor. It addresses software capture only.
