The most dangerous moment in a screen share is not the beginning. It is the middle, when you realize something sensitive is about to appear and your hands are nowhere near the privacy tool. You are typing in a browser. A Slack DM arrives. You need to cloak it now, not after you find the mouse, navigate to the tray icon, open the GUI, and find the right toggle.
Global hotkeys remove that friction.
What Global Hotkeys Do in NoCapture
A global hotkey is a keyboard combination that works from any application, even when NoCapture is not the active window. You can assign hotkeys to:
- Toggle protection on the active window
- Trigger a saved routine
- Pin the active window on top
- Enable or disable ghost mode
- Open the live preview pane
The default toggle is Ctrl + Alt + N. You can customize this to any combination that does not conflict with your existing shortcuts.
When Hotkeys Save You
The unexpected DM. You are presenting to a client and a Slack message arrives from your recruiter. You hit the hotkey. Slack cloaks instantly. The client never sees the notification or the window.
The screen share that started early. You joined a Zoom call and the host started recording before you were ready. You hit the routine hotkey. All sensitive apps cloak, titles mask, and notifications suppress in under a second.
The mid-stream app switch. You are streaming and need to open a reference document that is not cloaked. You open it, realize it is visible to capture, and hit the hotkey. It cloaks without stopping the stream.
The panic moment. Something sensitive appears on screen and you do not have time to diagnose what it is. You hit the routine hotkey for your "Emergency" preset, which cloaks everything except the app you are actively sharing.
How to Configure Hotkeys
- Open NoCapture settings
- Navigate to Hotkeys
- Assign combinations for each action you want keyboard-accessible
- Test each hotkey in a non-critical context
- Save and verify that the hotkeys work even when NoCapture is minimized
We recommend assigning at least:
- One hotkey to toggle protection on the active window
- One hotkey to trigger your most-used routine
- One hotkey to open live preview for quick verification
Why This Matters More Than It Seems
Mouse-based privacy tools create a context switch. You must leave your current application, find the tool, interact with it, and return. In a high-pressure presentation or a live stream, this context switch is long enough for a leak to occur. A hotkey is sub-second. The difference between a two-second mouse interaction and a 200-millisecond keystroke is the difference between a close call and a viral clip.

The Limitation
Global hotkeys require NoCapture to be running. If the application is not launched, the hotkeys do not register. We recommend enabling auto-start so NoCapture is always available. Hotkeys also do not work during UAC prompts or secure desktop sessions, which is a Windows security restriction, not a NoCapture limitation.
