The final failure mode in screen-share privacy is the one you never see coming. You forget to enable protection. You join the call, start sharing, and only realize three minutes later that Slack is visible. By then the recording is made. The screenshot is taken. The damage is archived.
Focus Mode exists to remove this last dependency on human memory.
How Focus Mode Works
Focus Mode in NoCapture monitors the system for screen-sharing activity. When it detects that Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Discord, OBS, or another supported application has started transmitting your display, it automatically triggers a designated routine.
The routine can include:
- Cloaking specified applications
- Masking their titles
- Suppressing notifications
- Enabling live preview
- Pinning reference windows on top
You do not need to remember to click anything. The protection applies the moment sharing begins.
What Triggers Focus Mode
Focus Mode detects screen sharing through multiple signals:
- Window title changes in conferencing apps (e.g., Zoom shows "Screen Sharing" in the title bar)
- Process events from screen-capture APIs
- Display topology changes when a virtual display driver activates
This multi-signal approach reduces false negatives. If one signal is missed, another usually catches the transition.
Configuring Focus Mode
- Create or select a routine that represents your standard privacy configuration
- Open NoCapture settings and enable Focus Mode
- Assign the routine to Focus Mode
- Select which conferencing apps should trigger it
- Test by starting a screen share in a private meeting and verifying that the routine applies
We recommend pairing Focus Mode with auto-start so NoCapture is always running in the background.
Why This Is Different From Manual Routines
A manual routine requires you to remember to trigger it. Focus Mode removes that step. The difference is subtle but critical:
- Manual routine: "I will remember to cloak before I share." (You will not always remember.)
- Focus Mode: "Protection applies when sharing starts, regardless of whether I remembered." (Deterministic.)

The Edge Cases
Focus Mode may not trigger if:
- NoCapture is not running when the share starts
For these cases, the manual routine hotkey remains the fallback and verify by just taking a quick screenshot or open the app. Focus Mode covers the common path. Hotkeys cover the exceptions.
Teams and Organizational Focus Mode
In NoCapture Teams, administrators can enforce Focus Mode policies. Every employee's machine auto-cloaks designated apps when sharing starts. The policy is pushed through the admin dashboard and cannot be disabled by individual users. This is particularly valuable for organizations with compliance requirements.

The Limitation
Focus Mode detects software screen sharing. It does not detect a camera pointed at your monitor or a hardware capture device. It also does not prevent you from manually sharing a window that contains sensitive content. It automates the cloaking of background apps. It does not govern what you choose to share.
